On behalf of our client, the European Space Agency, we are looking for a skilled Communication Systems & Technologies Engineer to join our team at the esteemed ESA-ESTEC site, in the Netherlands. Your mission will be to provide a diverse range of support tasks, including tender preparation for ESA R&D, technical follow-up on activities and contracts, specialized engineering support for ESA and European space projects, design validation through analyses and testing, and the design, implementation, and testing of technological projects

Responsibilities

As a Communication Systems & Technologies Engineer you will concentrate your activities on the following:

  • Provide support to the Agency projects and programs in the area of space system security engineering, with an emphasis on space segment, including system security design, definition and implementation of system security requirements, assessment of vulnerabilities applicable to space
  • systems, recommendation of security mitigations and countermeasures.
  • Contribute to the definition, analysis and consolidation of system security requirements.
  • Contribute to the definition of security reference architecture for space systems.
  • Support system reviews through projects’ lifecycle on security aspects.
  • Analyse vulnerabilities, assess their impact and propose suitable security mitigations and countermeasures.
  • Analyse evidence of fixes of vulnerabilities.
  • Assess Requests for Waivers / Requests for Deviation on security aspects and provide recommendations regarding their acceptability.
  • Organise and supervise security audits / vulnerability assessment / penetration testing activities on ESA projects and programs and analysing their results (including analysis of evidence of findings and corrections).
  • Assist the ESA Technical Officer on Research and Development activities (in the area of security for space) during their lifecycle (writing the Statement of Work, assessing Industry proposals, supporting the implementation).
  • Support Project / System Security Officer (PSSO) or Security Officer (SO).
  • Support laboratory activities as required.

Profile

Do you think you are the person we are looking for? See below what experience or knowledge you should bring:

  • A Master or PhD degree or equivalent in Engineering (preferably in cyber security, or computer science, or telecom, or aerospace), with a strong knowledge and experience in Security engineering / cyber security.
  • 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of space systems and ground systems architecture.
  • Knowledge on space segment architecture and spacecraft avionics.
  • Very good knowledge in security best practices.
  • Basic knowledge on applied cryptography.
  • Knowledge on Information Security Management Systems.
  • Knowledge on CCSDS protocols and standards.
  • Knowledge on RF security is considered a plus.
  • Knowledge in Telecommunication Engineering with particular emphasis on digital communication system and sub-system techniques, high-speed processing techniques for communication via satellites.
  • Knowledge of satellite communication architectures and techniques.
  • Experience in analysis and design of modern digital communication systems, coding and synchronization issues.
  • Familiarity with modern communication system and sub-system simulation techniques, as a minimum Matlab and C/C++ program languages.
  • Knowledge of modern prototyping and testing methodologies for digital communication sub-systems is also preferred.
  • Candidates must be eligible for security clearance from their national security administration.
  • Comfortable with working in a diverse and multinational team environment.
  • Proficient in the English language, both written and spoken.
  • Knowledge of another EU member state language is an asset.
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the EU.
